Alice’s top 5 tips for getting through interviews

1.    Making a good first impression.

•    A tad too smart is better than a tad too scruffy, but research the company first this should help you gauge just how smart you need to be.
•    Be punctual! I always set my clocks 5 minutes fast when going to interviews so I know I wont be late. If you are running late let them know, don’t leave them twiddling their thumbs.
•    Keep good eye contact and smile! Remember 80% of communication is non-verbal, the way you hold yourself will tell a lot more about you than what you say.

2.    Interviews aren’t meant to be a piece of cake.

•    Don’t worry if you’re nervous, its good to have a few butterflies in your stomach just don’t let them get the better of you!
•    Sometimes interviewers will purposely ask you hard questions to throw you and see how you cope under pressure, keep calm, take a second to think about your answer and compose yourself.

3.    Research the company

•    Make sure you research the company before you go to the interview; most companies have websites so have a quick look around, you should have a general idea of what the company does and its always good to know a bit of  history for the company.
•    If you have questions to ask, ask them. This is as much as finding the right company for you as it is for them to find the right person for the job.

4.    Practice makes perfect

•    Prepare some examples from your work, school, or personal life which show your skills or have shown you overcoming obstacles.
•    Ask a friend or family member to do a mock interview with you so you’re used to being in that sort of situation, they’ll also be able to give you pointers on how to improve before you go to your interview.

5.    Sell yourself!

•    Think about your strengths and weaknesses and how your weaknesses can be turned to positives for example: I’m quite shy and quiet, but this means that I focus on my work and the task in hand.
•    What will you bring to the role and how could you improve it?
•    Talk about achievements and positive changes you’ve made and how they might apply to the role you’re going for. This is one thing I’m terrible at and I’ve found that asking your friends and family to highlight your key strengths for you helps; they might come up with something you hadn’t even realised!
