Our client has been established for over 6 years and has grown into the largest provisioning company in the yachting industry for yachts over 50 meters. They supply their clients with the complete range of conceivable provisions required, from food and wine to interior products. They have a staff of 20 and offices in London, Nice and Antigua so that they can cover virtually every destination in the world that clients may be cruising in.
The business has grown significantly in the last 2 years and will record nearly £3m in revenues for 2009. Significant growth is anticipated in the next 2-3 years.
With the recent and future anticipated growth it has become evident that the financial skills and resourcing currently in the business are not sufficient. It has therefore been decided to recruit a Financial Controller to shape the finance activities of the business for the coming year and beyond.
Role
Reporting to the Managing Director the Financial Controller has responsibility for all aspects of the company's financial control, reporting, planning and analysis. The role will demand a high degree of technical capability combined with commercial expertise and creativity to support the Managing Director.
There will be three individuals reporting to the Financial Controller.
A London based bookkeeper.
A Nice based finance resource.
An Antigua based finance resource.
The Financial Controller will manage all financial aspects of the business:
1) Strategy & Planning
- Work with the MD to develop the 3 year financial projection.
- Develop the annual revenue targets and cost budget (by office). Subsequent monitoring of their achievement on a monthly basis.
2) Management Information
- Prepare the monthly P&L, Balance Sheet and Cashflow analyses and present them to the MD.
- Develop appropriate debtors and creditor analyses, reviewing them weekly during peak months, bi-weekly at all other times with the MD.
3) Monthly Accounting & Controls
- Ensure timely invoicing and receipt of monies from debtors and accurate invoicing from creditors and subsequent payment.
- Sign off all company expenses.
- Oversee payroll and tax contribution payments, in conjunction with company's payroll bureau.
- Administer the bank accounts and perform monthly bank reconciliations.
- One of the two signatories on all company bank accounts.
- Develop and run thorough financial procedures e.g. for customer order receipt through to payment.
- Ensure all finance records are kept accurately and securely and in line with legislative requirements with appropriate controls and segregation of duties.
- Ensure financial policies are being adhered to as set out in the company policy guide. For example on staff expenses.
4) Financial Accounting
- Liaise with the business's external accountants on the preparation of the annual accounts, tax return and documentation for Companies House and HMRC. [Note: longer term it is anticipated that the Financial Controller will prepare the draft annual accounts for submission to companies house.]
- Primary point of contact for Companies House and HMRC.
5) People Management
- Supervise the finance activities of three staff. Setting the individuals annual objectives with weekly review of activities to achieve them.
6) Adhoc
- Support any supplier negotiations.
- Negotiate and manage the business's contents, professional indemnity, employers liability and other insurances.
- Liaise with the business's lawyers on any contracts e.g. leases and client T&Cs.
Core Competencies & Skills
Key skills and competencies required are:
" Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
" Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles.
" Knowledge of an accounting system (preferably Sage).
" Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight time frames.
" Self starter with a strong work ethic and ability to work to tight deadlines.
" Problem solver with a track record of process improvement.
" Excellent communicator both verbal and written.
" Robust personality able to challenge and shape decisions.
" Structured but flexible approach willing to adapt to circumstances and direct as appropriate.
The following skills are desired but may not be required for the right individual.
" Finance qualification (CIMA, ACA).
" Spoken and written French.
" Systems implementation knowledge.
Location & Travel
The role is based at the London office in Bermondsey. There may be a small amount of travel required either to Antigua (potentially once a year) and Nice (potentially 2-3 times during peak summer months).
